This works well because you don't even need that high Dexterity as a Rogue, can have a shield, use your rapier as a spellcasting focus, wear medium armor, and don't have to choose between GFB/BB and Extra Attack for your action. This will let you do 9d6 Sneak Attack damage with the 1d8 from the Rapier plus the damage from Booming Blade/Green-Flame Blade, as well as using Intelligence as long as the attacks are with magic weapons (which you should have as an artificer). The best option to multiclass these is Arcane Trickster 17/Battle Smith 3. This will allow you to focus almost all of your stat increases to Intelligence, and the rest mostly into Dexterity and Constitution. For Intelligence, Eldritch Knights, Arcane Tricksters, and Bladesingers are good options to multiclass into Battle Smiths. Here are the grouping of classes/feats that you can combine for each spellcasting ability stat to maximize the overall damage output of your build: If you can combine either Shillelagh, Battle Ready, or Hex Warrior with a way of getting Green-Flame Blade and/or Booming Blade, and other features/spells that allow for you to stack as much damage on one attack as possible, you have maximized the use of these spells. Ways to get these spells include being/multiclassing into a Wizard, Sorcerer, or Warlock, taking Magic Initiate in one of those classes to get the cantrips, being an Arcana Cleric, being a High Elf, and being/multiclassing into Arcane Trickster or Eldritch Knight. Once you get one of the features listed above to focus on either Wisdom, Charisma, or Intelligence with your weapon attack rolls, you need to get either Booming Blade or Green-Flame Blade (preferably both for uses in a variety of scenarios). In order to get Hex Warrior, you only have to take one level of Hexblade Warlock, which is more attractive than Battle Ready because of it only requiring one level of dipping and it focuses around Charisma, which many other classes need. In order to get Battle Ready you have to have at least 3 levels in Battle Master Artificer, which will give you a bit of class and subclass based baggage that won't fit a lot of builds that can exploit this feature (none of them bad, but infusions, steel defenders, and other artificer bits make multiclassing into this class very transformative to your overall character concept). In order to get Shillelagh, you have to be a Druid, Druidic Warrior Fighting Style Ranger, Pact of the Tome-Warlock, Nature Cleric, or take the Magic Initiate (Druid) feat. The first and probably best combo that I will mention is to combine Shillelagh, Battle Ready, or Hex Warrior with one of these cantrips. There are many ways to take advantage of these spells and get ahold of them. Okay, it is well known that Booming Blade and Green-Flame Blade are some of the best cantrips in the game for gish-builds, especially for the subclasses/classes that only get one attack from their Attack action.
